This was a wonderful experience! My dog and I are traveling so we stopped here to primitive camp for the night. It's fairly quiet at the part further from I80. Everyone here seemed to be normal travelers. No "full time residents". Everyone was respectful and quiet. I watched a beautiful sunset and fell asleep to the melody of bugs. There is a fairly long walking trail that is nice. The entire area is mowed. However, so many ppl are leaving trash on the ground, it's so rude and ridiculous! There are no trash cans, no trash service but people who are doing this need to take the trash with them. They obviously had no issue hauling it here. Put the trash back in the vehicle in the same spot you brought it in. If this is how people "thank" Nebraska for this beautiful camping and fishing area then don't be upset if this freebie/nice place is removed bc you don't take care of it!
Nice place for birding. I saw lots of Eastern Kingbirds. The loop around the South lake includes some paved trail sections. Total length about 5 miles. It's right at 6 miles if you walk from the Sparky's One Stop.
Free camper parking, awesome view from upper lot. Noisy from Interstate, but that closeness provided perfect cell service.
Great spot to overnight with a cabover camper. Bit of a rough road, and might be a hard turnaround with a pull-behind. But if you're in a truck camper, awesome. Sign says it's closed during the winter. Walk around by the lake if you happen to stay - it's worth it.
Lots of opportunities for birdwatching. My Merlin app detected at least 15 species is here in a short time. The downside, discarded tires along the shore.
