The decaying partial deer carcass with the head still on that was in the parking lot (In July) next to the dumped appliances should have been my sign. But no. We trudged on. The assumed paths were not marked, and not maintained. Thankfully, after I was stung or bitten by something that was clearly angry and possessed (based on the swelling), I was fortunate to be able to follow the trail of scattered clothing through the woods and back to the deer head. The oversized ticks that were running up my leg to avoid the repellent, while I was driving out of there, was just a bonus. Apparently, that was just one of a few entrances to this area, so I had to know how this mess got such a high rating- so I navigated down the street to the next entrance and was stopped by a Road Closed sign leading to the entrance. Probably best. Zero chance I will ever return to this place.
I entered with my dogs at the river kayak access. Crane Pond is really well over a 3 star but the signage is poor for parking areas and trails off Seven Star Rd. We took a rolling trail overlooking the marsh and my dogs were excited at a couple deer on the trail. I checked out the Center St gate which is well marked.
Not that many animals during winter time, but still a fun wild space for hiking!
Love this walk. Very few people. Is quiet and peaceful for most part. Good variety of wildlife.
Beautiful area to hike and to wild life sighting!
